Teen Anxiety Relief Training is a weekly, 7-session program for
teens age 15 to 18

Training Group Q & A

What will happen during the group sessions?
Sessions will introduce you to what causes anxiety and provide you with specific tools and strategies that will help you relieve your anxiety. Instructors will provide information and worksheets about anxiety-relieving strategies and then facilitate activities and group discussions. You will be encouraged to select a specific anxiety-provoking area of your life to work on during the series. During each session, the group will break into pairs so that you may discuss how you might apply the strategy(s) presented to a specific area of your life. There will also be time during each session for teens to share with the entire group what has worked and what does not work for them. You will not be required to share with the entire group, but teens often find sharing time to be very beneficial, because you will learn from each other and discover that you are not alone in your worries.

Who will facilitate the training?
The group will be facilitated by Liz Elliott, MA, LMFT and Denise Anderson, MA. Liz is a licensed marriage and family therapist with a practice in Lake Stevens (ElliottCounseling.com). Liz has been working with teens for the last 6 years and enjoys helping teens find their most resilient inner selves and a way to thrive and grow no matter what life has to offer. Denise facilitates groups and workshops (www.DiscoverBetterOptions.com) to help individuals, families, and parents foster creative and emotional growth while strengthening interpersonal relationships.
 
How many people will be at the sessions?
The maximum number of teens will be 16.
 
What will I learn?
During this 7-week training, you will learn how to identify and modify your thoughts and behaviors that are contributing to your anxiety. General topics of discussion for the sessions follow:
  • What is anxiety, what are the symptoms of anxiety, what triggers your anxiety
  • How to regain control of your unhelpful thoughts and mistaken beliefs
  • How to focus on what really matters, relax your mind and body, and practice mindfulness
  • Challenge your fears about anxiety as well as your positive beliefs about anxiety
  • How to problem solve without excessive worry
  • How to accept uncertainty and develop helpful thinking and behaviors to replace your anxiety
  • Develop a self-management plan for your future

Does this stuff actually help people that worry a lot?
Most of the strategies that will be presented will be cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tools. CBT is an evidenced-based practice for anxiety, which means that research has shown that it is an effective therapy for treating people who suffer from anxiety. Once you’ve used the tools taught during these sessions to decrease your anxiety in one area, you will be able to use these same tools to tackle other areas of your life now, and into your future.

Cost
  • $175 for the entire 7-week series ($25/session) if paid by April 1st
  • $210 for the entire 7-week series ($30/session) if paid between April 2 and 8
  • $35 per session if paid weekly (space permitting)
